There are a variety of, automated, non player ships (NPShips).
Some are 'neutral' (just going about their business). Others are 'hostile' (will attack you).
If you shoot neutral NPShips they will probably become hostile.
If destroyed NPShips may deposit cargo/minerals.
NPShip pilots are not highly skilled navigators. They frequently crash and can often get in the way. Especially at space stations.
