A few things don't look the way you may think they should. In some cases there are good reasons:-
When looking art the SRS there are many apparent inconsistencies on the screen:-
Several ships can occupy the same location without colliding.
When a ship fires the weapon comes from the centre of the ship
When a ship is hit the explosion is central not on the ships shields
etc.
So what's going on? The answer to this is simple ... "The universe is big, really big. " .(D.Adams). In reality each pixel on the SRS is thousands of km across. If ships were drawn to scale you couldn't see them. The SRS is attempting to provide you with useful information about ship type, speed and orientation. It is also trying to look 'pretty'. This ships are displayed at many times their real size.
At present this game is under development and combat is unbalanced and rather lethal. This is mainly due to the fact that shields have yet to be implemented.
